2013, paper, ink, dirt, wood, waxed thread
In this project I buried seven books in Forest Park, Saint Louis, MO. After a week, the books were unearthed, and the effects of the elements could be seen on the books. The installation charts two types of information.
On one wall is the map of the burials, along with non-quantitative data from the area, such as what was happening in the park, what music I was listening to, and how my sunburn was progressing.
The other wall included the aforementioned non-scientific data and the quantifiable scientific data, such as weather, vegetation, apparent sprinklers, etc., and the books.
The project is meant to track the various climactic and human interventions on the burial site. They are truly Earthdrawings, as I, the artist, had no control on the patterns that developed on the pages of the books. The information on both the walls is meant to shape the under- standing of the viewerof how the images were formed, and increase their awareness of what is occurring in the surrounding natural world.
